From the beach, Essaouira may appear to be one large body of water. In reality, the areas change quickly: more chop offshore, busier corridors near the club, more swell towards the south and a beach that fills up depending on the time.
For a first session, staying in the school or intermediate zone is not a lack of ambition. This is what allows you to understand the spot without putting yourself in a situation where the return becomes more difficult than expected.
Calm or light (12-18 knots). Ideal window for beginners.
Gradual climb (18-25 knots). Good session for all levels.
Thermal peak (25-35 knots in summer). For experienced riders.
Wind softening. Sunset sessions often very pleasant.

Stay in an area where you can enter without assistance. The bay is wide and tempting.
Sessions of 3 hours+ in strong wind tire quickly. Fatigue leads to bad decisions.

Most incidents happen at the end of the session, when the rider still feels capable but precision has already dropped. In Essaouira, the wind, the sun and the chop quickly tire you out. Better to do a shorter, clean session, then come back the next day with energy.
The bay does not belong to wingfoilers. Depending on the time and the season, you share the water with kites, surfers, swimmers, sometimes a few fishermen or boats. Safety therefore comes as much from your level as from your ability to anticipate the trajectories of others.
Keep some space around you, especially with a foil. A rider changing direction, a falling kite or a poorly visible swimmer can change your course in a second. The right reflex is to slow down, pass behind or fall voluntarily rather than forcing an uncertain passage.
For a first self-guided session, watch for ten minutes from the beach before entering. Watch where the riders launch, where they return, where the chop forms and where the swimmers area begins. This simple reading avoids many errors.
