Essaouira is a good place to learn to surf. Gentle and regular waves in the bay, sandy bottom, long beach: the falls are not scary and there is no shortage of space. Most of our students stand up in the first session - not for long, not neatly, but standing.
Surfboard chosen according to your level and size.
Wetsuit included to stay comfortable in the water.
Simple teaching to get up quickly and progress cleanly.
Accessible bay, sandy bottom and space to learn.
Board, wetsuit and framing are included, at no extra charge on arrival.
Essaouira Bay - gentle waves, sandy bottom, perfect for beginners and progress.
Sidi Kaouki - 30 minutes south. Regular and more powerful beach break for intermediates.
Imsouane - 1h15 south. One of the longest right-handers in Africa. For longboarders and intermediates who want endless rides.

The first sensations come more quickly in a soft and regular area.
Your gaze stabilizes the steering and limits falls during take-off.
The memory of the gesture counts more than the strength in the first sessions.
Sidi Kaouki and Imsouane provide a logical follow-up to motivated students.
To start surfing in Essaouira, the bay is often the best starting point. The bottom is sandy, the beach is wide and the waves are generally gentler than on south-facing spots. A beginner can concentrate on placement, paddling and take-off without having to deal with a wave that is too hollow from the first session.
Conditions change with swell, wind and tide. The instructor therefore chooses the exact area before each lesson. Some days, we only work in the foam to install the bases. Other days, the more comfortable students can go get their first green waves in a cleaner section.

Surfing requires repetition. The first session is often used to understand board placement, pop-up and gaze direction. The second allows you to read the foam better, get up faster and stay on course. Over a week, we can start working on paddling, timing and the first unbroken waves depending on the conditions.
The point of a supervised lesson is to correct gestures that are repeated incorrectly: hands too close, feet poorly placed, looking towards the board, starting too late. A small, well-timed fix can save a lot of frustrating sessions.
Once the basics are in place, what happens next depends on your level. The bay remains perfect for consolidating, renting a board and repeating without pressure. Sidi Kaouki gives more power and requires a better wave reading. Imsouane offers long rides, but the line-up can be busy and requires respecting priorities.
The team can direct you to the right option depending on the swell of the week. We don't send you to the most famous spot on principle: we choose the one that will really help you progress that day.
The best time for a surf lesson in Essaouira is often in the morning, before the wind picks up. The water surface is cleaner, the waves are easier to read and beginners tire less quickly. In summer, the waves are generally smaller and more regular, which provides a reassuring setting for learning the take-off and the first directions.
In autumn and winter, the Atlantic swell becomes more consistent. It is interesting for intermediates, but the instructor must choose the area and time of the lesson precisely. A good surf session does not only depend on the size of the waves: it depends on the wind, the tide, the crowds and the actual level of the group.

The group course is the right choice to get started, discover the basics and share a simple session with other students. Semi-private is more effective for a couple, a family or two friends who want closer monitoring. The private lesson is recommended if you already have some basics and want to correct a specific point: paddling, take-off, wave reading or trajectory.
For children, families and groups with different levels, we prefer to adapt the format rather than putting everyone in the same session. A child discovering the ocean, an adult beginner and an intermediate surfer do not progress with the same instructions.
In our surf lessons in Essaouira, the board and wetsuit are included. For a beginner, we generally choose a soft top with volume, stable and tolerant. For a student who is starting to turn or take green waves, we can gradually reduce the size to gain maneuverability without losing too much buoyancy.
The wetsuit also matters. The Atlantic can be cool, even when it's hot on the beach. A suitable wetsuit allows you to stay longer in the water, listen to instructions better and not end the session just because you are cold.
The most common mistakes are simple: looking at the board instead of looking ahead, placing your hands too close to your body, getting up in two steps, leaving too late or choosing a board that is too small. Alone, we can repeat these faults for days without seeing them. With an instructor, the correction happens immediately and becomes easier to integrate.
One or two lessons at the start of a surf trip can change throughout the week. You then return to independent rental with better benchmarks, you better understand where to place yourself, and each wave becomes a useful repetition rather than a random test.
If you come for several days, the ideal is not to pile up classes without an objective. You can start with two supervised sessions to set up the bases, add an independent rental in the bay to rehearse, then consider an excursion to Sidi Kaouki or Imsouane if the swell and your level permit. This progression remains meaningful and avoids leaving too early for a more demanding spot.
Families and groups also appreciate this organization. Some can stay on a gentle bay course while the more comfortable rent a board or go on a longer session. Surfing in Essaouira works well when you agree to adapt the program to everyone's real level, rather than forcing everyone into the same session.
A local school knows the sandbars, the times when the wind becomes bothersome and the days when the bay is more suitable than an outdoor spot. This reading matters as much as the technique. It allows you to choose a consistent board, a less busy area and a simple objective for the session.
You also save time on logistics: suit in the right size, board already ready, clear briefing, possibility of renting after the course and advice for the rest of the stay. For a beginner, this simplicity makes the experience much smoother.
