The first session sets the tone. A beginner who starts with a board that is too small, a bad placement or a poorly chosen wave can spend two hours struggling. With an instructor who chooses the right area and quickly corrects simple mistakes, progress becomes much more enjoyable.
In Essaouira, we especially emphasize three basics: place yourself in the right place on the board, look in front of you and wait for the wave to really carry before getting up. These details change almost everything from the first morning.

Pop-up on the beach, first foams in the water. Most beginners stand up in the first session with a good instructor and a suitable board.
Consistency on the foam, first attempts at positioning before the wave breaks.
First green waves, first timid turns.
Bottom turn, top turn, peak reading, priority rules.
Looking at your feet instead of at a point on the horizon. Doing a pop-up too hastily before being in speed. Insufficient paddle: not plunging your arms deep enough into the water. Board too small for its level.
In the bay, you can read the waves in advance, position yourself and decide whether to leave or not. There is no vague surprise coming from the sidelines.
Falling on sand and falling on a rock do not produce the same confidence. Here, falls are not scary.
The beach is several kilometers long. You can find your space and concentrate without pressure.
In summer, the morning window often gives the cleanest first sessions.
The classic mistake made by beginners learning on their own: choosing a board that's too small because they've seen pictures of shortboards. A board that is too small sinks under your weight, doesn't carry you, and prevents you from getting up before the wave has already passed.
To start, the bigger and thicker it is, the better. A soft top of 8 to 9 feet for someone of normal build: you float easily, you paddle without struggling, and you get up on the waves before they are dead.
In our courses, the material is adapted to each student. You don't have to worry about it: we choose for you according to your weight, the swell and the morning wind.
By looking at the board, you destabilize everything. Fixate on a point on the horizon, not the board.
Many beginners stop paddling as soon as they feel the wave. It is precisely at this moment that you have to paddle the hardest to match the speed of the wave and trigger the take-off.
The pop-up should be quick and decisive. A hesitant movement lets the wave pass you before you are on your feet.
Too far forward, the board dives. Too far back, it slows down. Centering is learned with the instructor.
Small and regular waves, clean morning sessions, pleasant water (20-23°C). The ideal time to start: the conditions are progressive and without surprises.
More Atlantic swell, more powerful waves. Better conditions for intermediaries. Beginners can still come if the swell is moderate.

Surfing rewards patience. The best progress often comes from a series of small corrections: paddle better, orient the board better, stand up more calmly, stay low on your legs. When these bases become natural in the foams, moving onto cleaner waves is done with much less frustration.
A stable soft top allows you to learn without fighting against the equipment.
The gesture is worked first on the ground, then in the white water.
Understanding where to stand is as good as paddling strength.
After the foam, we aim for the first green waves.
We start teaching from 7-8 years old with adapted equipment. Children often learn faster than adults.
Yes. A correct swimming level is essential, even with a leash.
In daily sessions, you go from foam to the first green waves in a week. To ride with real ease, two weeks is ideal.
Yes: surf in the morning, before the wind picks up, then wingfoil in the afternoon. This is a popular Wetsuit among our customers.
In groups of up to 6 students, you benefit from a social environment and regular corrections. In private, 100% of the instructor's attention is on you: corrections arrive more quickly, especially in the first few hours.
